Information on disaster prevention in Komagatake

Komagatake

Overview of Komagatake

The surroundings around Hokkaido Komagatake Volcano (hereinafter referred to as Komagatake) are famous for their beauty and have been designated a seminational park. Komagatake, however, is also renowned as a volcano which erupts violently. It formed its present shape after repeated eruptions since it first spouted lava and pyroclastic flows about 30,000 years ago. Even within the last 10 years there have been more than 10 small-scale eruptions (phreatic explosions), and mountain climbing is restricted at the present time. There are five evacuation areas in the town, and we conduct evacuation training regularly in case of emergency.
